Weekend Update

After a week of finally getting back to running on somewhat of a regular schedule, I wanted this weekend to be about running. I wanted to concentrate on getting a more regular workout routine underway. So, on Friday I got up in the morning and went to the gym for my run. Everything was going fine until I grabbed my headphones on my way out the door. They were all tangled up, which made me angrier than usual because it was 6:00 AM and I was tired from the week. So I gave the cord a good yank and subsequently snapped my headphones in two. After trying to repair them unsuccessfully, I gave up and went to the gym without my iPod. It was, by far, the worst run I’ve had. Not only was I late by that point (which meant I had to cut my run short) but I had no music to wake me up and help me get in a running groove. Pure torture.

Nonetheless, I got through it and went to Best Buy after work on Friday and got myself a new pair of headphones. Better still, I got at least some running in on Friday. Saturday morning I got up and went to the 10 AM spinning class with Annie. I like spinning a lot and I can tell that my legs are much stronger than they were two months ago. I ran a quick mile to warm my body up for the class. The climbs were much easier than they used to be and I wasn’t nearly as tired afterwards. It was further encouragement to continue running. I can only imagine how I’ll do in two more months.

So, Saturday was a cross training day, obviously. Which is good because that meant that Sunday was to be my long run day. I got up and went to the gym about 10 AM and destroyed my pervious distance record of 5 miles by going 6! I had set 6 miles as my goal and was really pleased that I made it without too much trouble. I took a couple walking breaks, but they were only 1 minute each and were more for hydration than anything else. I did 6 miles in just over an hour, which was a good pace for me. Overall a great run.

The only downside is that I think I have some mild plantar faschitis in my right foot, which will necessitate some icing and rest. But I’ve allotted today as a rest day away from all things active so I plan on going home after work, taking some Advil (that and Aleve work GREAT for muscle pains for me), rigging an ice pack, propping my feet up and watching some TV until I have to go pick up Annie from work. Tomorrow is an easy day of just 3.5 miles but no need to aggravate a mild injury.
So, I was quite pleased with my weekend. I got some quality miles in, did some intense cross training, and didn’t seriously injure myself. Next weekend we’re going to Charlottesville and I’ve already found a running path near out B&B to explore Saturday morning. Should be good for another 6 miles, hopefully!
